SOUL Students from University of Louisville to help clean up Greenwood Cemetery

Councilwoman Scott thanks the volunteers for their willingness to help

Louisville – This Saturday, August 24^th, a special group of volunteers will spend the afternoon helping maintain the heritage and history for many local families when they help clean up the Greenwood Cemetery in District 1.

The volunteers are from University of Louisville’s Student Outreach Uniting Louisville program. It is an annual program designed to acquaint incoming freshmen students with communities surrounding them.

"As groups mobilize to attend the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, I applaud these SOUL students from U of L for their volunteer service to our community,” says Councilwoman Attica Scott (D-1).
Some 10 to 20 SOUL Students are expected at the Greenwood Cemetery. Beginning at 3:00pm, they will help clean and maintain the headstones and markers which over the years have been neglected.

"I have received numerous complaints of outrage about the neglected condition of this historic Cemetery from family members who have loved ones buried in the Cemetery," says Scott. "Unfortunately, no one is taking responsibility for the ownership and regular care of Greenwood Cemetery so it is up to us in community to fill in the gaps."

The Greenwood Cemetery on Hale Avenue has been in place since 1860. For decades, it was run as a commercial cemetery that changed ownership multiple times before it fell into neglect and was finally closed in 1993. Since that time, various neighborhood groups and volunteers have tried to maintain the gravesites.

“I would encourage anyone in the surrounding area to come out and join these SOUL students in helping us preserve what is a part of our community history,” says Scott.

Freshman Summer Sendoff Parties

The Student Affairs Parents Association teamed up with the Alumni Association and the Admissions Office this summer to plan a number of Freshman Sendoff Parties.

 The sendoff parties give new students and their parents an opportunity to meet other new UofL freshman from their area . Parties have been scheduled at alumni homes in Madisonville, Lexington, Northern KY, and Bowling Green. The parties have been very well received and attendance has been great.
